By now Clark recognized the sound of Lex's car in his driveway and his footsteps on the stairs has he made his way into the fortress. Usually those sounds gave him a thrill, but today they just made him want to crawl into a hole and hide.
"Do you want to tell me what that was all about?" Lex asked once he settled himself next to Clark on the couch.
"I lost a bet," Clark said miserably.
"How far were you going to go?"
"I don't know. Down to my boxers, I guess. That's what the loser had to do." Clark couldn't look at Lex.
"Why did you stop?" Lex's voice was different, strained.
On the run home Clark thought that would be hard a question to answer. Why should stripping down to his boxers in front of Lex be any different than stripping in front of Pete? They were both his friends.
It didn't take long, though, for Clark to realize exactly why the situations couldn't be more different. He looked at Lex now. "I stopped because you were there."
The hurt was all over Lex's face, despite his obvious effort to keep his emotions in check. "Oh. Clark, I'm sorry. If I've done something to make you uncom--"
"Stop." Clark put out his hand to stop Lex was from getting up. "You didn't make me uncomfortable."
"What then?"
"The first time," Clark began. He was suddenly incredibly nervous, on the brink of revealing a truth that laid him bare much more than that other truth Lex was always pushing for. He continued, "I always imagined that the first time you see me, you know, naked, it would be special."
"You've imagined me seeing you naked?" Lex's tone was equal parts disbelief and lascivious.
"Yeah. A lot." Clark's grin matched the one slowly spreading across Lex's face.
"Do you want to come back to the castle?" Lex asked, moving closer.
"More than anything."
Lex stood up and held out his hand. Clark took it and they started for Lex's car. "I can't wait to see the end of the show."
