"How can someone get kicked off a chess team?! You're making that up," Clark accused, laughing.
"Clark," Lex said, mock-hurt. "Would I lie to you?"
"Okay, okay. Why did they? Performance-enhancing drugs? Crack caffeine?"
"Well, I never have been able to just say no," Lex said, toasting Clark with his mug and taking an exaggerated gulp.
"No kidding. You must have polished off a can of whipped cream by now."
"Lana messed up my order," Lex denied.
"Lana got fired a week ago, admit it, you just love your coffee smothered with cream and served in a ridiculous glass."
"I will admit to no such thing."
Clark grinned and let it drop. "Why'd they kick you off the team?"
"Apparently I had to be reminded chess is not a contact sport one time too many."
Clark burst out laughing.
"They removed the rook eventually."
"Has anyone ever told you you're a complete freak?"
Quite a few, in fact, but none of them had infused so much affection in the term that Lex could imagine hearts had been drawn around the word. He sipped his drink and smiled at him over the edge of his cup. Mission accomplished, anyway: Clark had forgotten all about his prematurely dead football career and had fallen back on the couch, shaking with poorly-suppressed mirth.
