"I don't know, Chlo..."
"You look great!"
"Yeah, but-"
"No buts! You asked for my help, now you're going to accept it!"
"But... horns?"
Clark scratches the back of his neck. He studies his own reflection one more time, slowly turning around until he can see his back. He has no idea his ass is *that* shape until now, when it's wrapped in leather that leaves nothing to the imagination. Sleek, tight and dark red leather covers his entire body, from the riding boots that almost reach his knees, to the pants, jacket and gloves. But that's not what's worst, no. The worst part is the *mask*. Clark hates masks, and this one covers not only his eyes but his head as well, and it has little *horns* on top. Clark gets that the guy's name is Devilicus, but-
"Chloe, no. And besides, he's got a girlfriend!"
Chloe, perched on the arm of the loft sofa, grins at him. "So?"
"So?" Clark checks out his butt again. Those pants are pretty miraculous. He turns to look at Chloe. "So she's pretty, smart, she's not a hick farmer kid like me and-"
"And Lex doesn't like her even a tenth of how much he likes you."
Clark glares. "You shouldn't encourage me."
She shrugs, "I don't know why not. You want him, he wants you, it's-"
"You don't know that," mutters Clark, ducking his head and blushing his cute little Clark blush.
Chloe sighs. If only. "I wouldn't know that, Clark, if I were blind, deaf and dumb! Since I'm not, yeah I do! So you wear that to the Talon Halloween party and I'll make sure that Lex shows up! The rest-"
"And just how are you gonna do that?"
Chloe licks across her upper lip. "I can be sneaky!"
...
"Chloe, I have not the time nor inclination to attend-"
"Clark's gonna be there."
Lex tries to pretend he is not spinning his chair around to disguise the interest that's all over his face. "He is?"
"M-hm, and you know what he told me?"
"What did he tell you, Chloe?"
"He said he had a dream that you had gone as Warrior Angel, and now he can't stop thinking about it!"
Lex is looking at her again, a mask of friendly disinterest secured in place. "Did he?"
"Yes, but. I never told you this, Lex!"
"No, of course not. Well, if there's anything else..."
"No, I just wanted to bring you those papers my dad asked me to. I'll see you around, Lex!"
"Yes, see you. Thanks, Chloe."
Chloe leaves the mansion with a huge smug grin on her face. Those two are *so* easy!
...
"Lex, I really don't understand why we have to come to a costume party at a coffee shop of all places!"
"Because..." Lex fixes his wings so they won't get crooked. "It's for charity and besides, I own the place and I live in this town. It's practically a requirement."
"And why do *I* have to come with you?"
Lex pauses, turns his head and looks into the dark eyes of the woman to whom he intends to propose marriage. "You don't."
He goes to the party alone.
...
"Will you stop messing with it?"
"It's uncomfortable!" whines Clark, shifting the mask one more time. Sure, he could use his x-ray vision to see through it, but why can't mask makers make masks that *fit*? Is it too much too ask, since there are obviously gloves in his size? "Where did you find this costume anyway?"
Chloe raises her hands. "Internet, where else? And I did max out my first credit card for both our costumes, but wasn't it totally worth it?" She twirls around, the glitter on her pixie costume and make up sparkling under the Talon lights. Clark has to smile at her. In a perfect world, Clark should be asking Chloe out, instead of angsting over his billionaire best friend *guy*, but no, nothing could be perfect and simple in Clark's life!
"I'm gonna pay you back every cent," he tells her firmly, and she waves a hand.
"I know. Clark, leave this mask alone alrea...ooh!"
Clark feels goosebumps along his spine, which is what he always feels when-
"Lex is here!" Chloe announces cheerfully, and leaves Clark to go say hi to the Talon's owner and Clark's friend. Clark takes a deep breath and spins around.
Lex really *is* there, in a dark purple one-piece leather suit, and large white wings on his back that have to weigh a ton, but he acts like they're not even there at all. The mask around his eyes actually brings out the color of his eyes, and he accepts Chloe's brief hug gracefully. Clark wonders when Lex started accepting hugs from people other than him. The thought springs him into action and he crosses the room towards Lex, who smiles at something that Chloe says but when his eyes travel up to meet Clark's, his expression changes. It softens, and Clark smiles; that is *his* smile, the one that no one else gets from Lex but him. He knows this.
"Hi, Lex!" he says, practically bouncing on the balls of his feet.
"Clark. Good to see you." Also as usual, Lex's eyes roam down Clark's body and up again, just slow enough to be on the edge of lustful, and Clark dips his head and a furious blush crawls up his neck and face. It is their ritual, unspoken but understood, and Clark loves it. The world ceases to exist around them, and Chloe has already gone off somewhere; it is no use trying to get Lex and Clark's attention when they meet again after a few days apart.
"You, too," Clark replies softly. "Where's Helen?" he asks, because his mother *did* teach him manners.
Lex waves a gloved hand and starts for the counter, glancing at Clark to make sure he will join his side. Clark does.
"Quite frankly, she didn't want to attend." Lex leans on the counter and meets Clark's eyes again. One corner of his lips curls in a smirk. "Devilicus? Really? I'd have pegged you for a hero, maybe Zorro, with a flowing cape? Either that or a boy scout."
Clark laughs and shakes his head. "No capes; all they do is get in the way." He tilts his head to the side. "Maybe I wanted to feel bad for once? Be villainous!"
It is Lex's turn to laugh, softly, his Lex laugh that no one else gets to hear, either. The one that makes Clark beam because *he* got it out of Lex, wherever Lex keeps it hidden deep inside him.
"And what a fine villain you make," Lex jokes, reaching his left hand and touching Clark's arm, squeezing it just a little. Lex always finds an excuse to put his hands on Clark, and Clarks loves that, too.
"You look *great* as Warrior Angel," says Clark, meaning every word. Lex actually ducks his head for a moment, looking like *he* might blush, but then he is raising his chin up in the air again and being all Lex and stuff.
"Thank you, Clark."
Clark says nothing, letting a comfortable silence fall between them; they don't need to fill every single second with conversation to enjoy each other's company. Most times, in fact, it's the exchanged glances between them that say it all.
It is during those moments without words, however, that Clark's mind tends to wander, and he is tempted to use his abilities more than ever. He never -okay, rarely- abuses his powers, but Lex is always so pale and smooth under his shirts and Clark only takes a peek and not for long and-
He gasps out loud, and takes a step back. A black box in one of the suit's pockets, with two rings inside is what he sees before he even gets to Lex's skin. Wedding bands.
"Is something wrong, Clark?" Lex asks, reaching for him again, but Clark takes another step back.
"You... you're going to *marry* Helen," Clark manages to whisper, before he looks around for the nearest exit; he feels like he can't breathe. He spots the back door that leads to the storage room and heads for it, cutting through the oblivious crowd. Once inside the poorly lit room since only one light is on, Clark pulls back his red leather cowl and rests his hands on a counter, taking deep, grounding breaths. He covers his mouth with his right hand; Lex is going to marry Helen! There is no Lex and Clark, there never has been; Clark is just a kid who probably amuses Lex and so is kept around, just a hick farmbo-
"Clark?" Lex doesn't understand what caused Clark to run away like that, but he won't let things get bad between them if he can help it.
"Go away, Lex," Clark says through gritted teeth, keeping his back to Lex. "I can't talk to you right now."
But Lex doesn't go away; he approaches Clark instead, and even lays a hand on Clark's left shoulder. "Clark, I don't-"
Clark sweeps around, his eyes filling with tears. "Desiree infected you; what's your excuse *now*, Lex?"
Lex lets his hand drop and his expression closes off. It's nothing Clark hasn't seen before, and it doesn't mean that Lex won't continue talking to him, so he waits. Lex searches Clark's face and whatever he finds causes his eyebrows to arch.
"Helen..." Lex swallows, like the very name left a sour taste in his mouth. Clark can only hope. "My father..." Lex hesitates again; he never thought it would be so hard to say it out loud.
It is Clark's turn to touch Lex's shoulder now. "What, Lex? You can tell me."
"My father is paying Helen a substantial amount of money, and I don't know what it is for. Yet. I intend to find out."
Clark frowns. "So you're gonna marry her?"
"Keep your friends close and your enemies closer, Clark."
Clark scoffs out loud. "The woman is a spy for Lionel and you're going to ask her to marry you? That has got to be the stupidest plan in the entire history of stupid plans, Lex!"
Lex's lips quiver but he does not allow the amusement to curl them into a smile. "It's complicated. You don't understand and-"
"Do you love her?" Clark asks point blank, his heart thundering inside his chest. He can hear Lex's heartbeat speeding up as well.
"I..." Lex begins to look away, but Clark's eyes hold his captive. It never occurs to him to inform Clark that it is none of his business. "I love the idea of her. A wife, a family, respectability."
Clark straightens up, putting some distance between them, if only just a few inches. "It's that important to you? Respectability?"
Lex hesitates for a second time. "If I want to become a LuthorCorp executive and someday CEO, and-"
"How do I factor in, Lex? In your grand plans of hostile takeovers and charity balls?"
"Clark, I-"
Clark takes Lex's arms in his hands, closes the space between them, and brings his face so close to Lex's that they are practically breathing the same air. When Lex sucks in a little bit of air through his lips, he knows he can still take Lex's breath away.
"Tell me I'm wrong, Lex," he whispers, looking into Lex's eyes as if they hold the answers he is searching for. "Tell me I'm just a kid and we're just friends, and you don't feel for me what I feel for you."
"You're-" Lex tries, he really does, but the words don't want to come out of his mouth. They would be lies, and he doesn't usually have a problem with lying, but when Clark is looking at him like this, he just can't. "I can't," he murmurs, and is only one second behind in kissing Clark back as Clark crashes their lips together.
Clark's lips are soft and warm, perfect as they suck on Lex's bottom lip, and then his tongue comes out to play. Lex opens his mouth for him and Clark claims it, wrapping his arms around Lex's waist and leaning over him, practically bending Lex back as he takes what he's wanted for years.
"Lex," Clark whispers when he pulls back, cheeks flushed and breath heavy. "Don't marry her."
"You're seventeen," Lex points out, hands holding on to Clark's shoulders as if he might fall if he lets go. "Even if we could-"
"Then wait for me," Clark says, squeezing Lex just a little. "I'll grow up, I promise."
"Your parents-"
"Love me. And I love *you*. They'll understand, and if they don't-"
Lex lets out a soft scoff. "You don't love me, Clark. Maybe you're curious; maybe you're afraid you might lose my friendship if-"
"I'm an alien," Clark tells him, and that shuts Lex up real quick. "I came here with the meteor shower and you did hit me with your car. I'm stronger and faster than anyone I know, bullets can't kill me, and I can see through walls. I sometimes watch you as you sleep, from outside the castle. Green meteor rocks can kill me and red ones take away my inhibitions. And don't tell me what I feel or don't feel for you. "I. *Love*. You."
"Jesus," Lex lets out, his fingers digging into the leather of Clark's costume.
Clark smiles a little. "Do you think he was an alien, too?"
Lex looks like he wants to smack Clark, but he thins his lips instead. "You can't be saying these things out loud, Clark, not in public!"
"If I didn't say them now, Lex, I'd never say them."
"But why... why now?"
"Haven't I made myself clear enough? I don't want you to marry Helen. She won't make you happy."
Lex smirks a little. "And you will?"
"I'll try, if you let me." Clark frowns slightly. "I should have trusted you a long time ago, but I was afraid of so many things; that you'd hate me or feel disgusted, or think that I was some kind of animal that-"
It is Lex's turn to shut Clark up, with another kiss. This time he presses forward, making Clark step back until he hits the wall behind him. Lex grabs Clark's wrists, holds them up over his head against the wall, and pushes one leg up between Clark's. Clark moans into Lex's mouth and lets Lex have all the control his little heart desires. Lex deserves to be cut some slack sometimes, Clark thinks, and this might be the perfect occasion for that.
"Alright," Lex whispers when they break the kiss. They are breathing hard and leaning on each other, and Clark rests his forehead on Lex's, and smiles a little.
"Yeah?"
Lex nods minimally. "Yes. I won't marry Helen." But when Clark moves to kiss him again, Lex takes a step back, even if he misses the heat and comfort of Clark's body instantly. "However," he starts, holding up a hand.
Clark gives his a flat look. "Lex!"
"No, Clark, hear me out. We'll wait. We'll wait until you're eighteen and if you still want to-"
"I will." Clark steps up against him again and hugs his waist, but loosely this time. "I will."
Lex clears his throat. "If so, we'll deal with that when the time comes."
"When you say-"
"I want it all, Clark," Lex finally admits, his voice firm and his hands on Clark's shoulders. "I want everything with you."
Clark flashes him a megawatt smile and nods. "Me, too."
"But first," Lex declares, stroking Clark's cheeks with his thumbs. "We're friends. There's a party out there. We should go enjoy it."
Clark understands; Lex is willing to take it easy for his sake. He is thankful, and places one last kiss on Lex's lips as a token of thanks. The last for now, but first of many to come. Someday they will look back at this day and smile fondly as they hold hands and make love. Today, Clark thinks it's a good thing that Lex already owns the Talon, or he would definitely want to buy it for the historical value it now possesses. The place where they first kissed. Clark knows that Lex will never let the Talon get demolished. He takes Lex's hand and starts towards the door, only letting go when Lex swings the door open.
The sounds of the party and the bright lights do not bother Clark; he might start floating if he is not careful. He will not think of what would have happened if he had not told Lex, what paths their lives would have taken. *This* is real and it is what he wants, and so he beams at Lex, who laughs softly, and it still is Clark's favorite sound in the world. It has been since they met.
"So," he says once they reach the table with the drinks and Lex pours them some punch. He touches Lex's shoulder simply because he, out of everyone else in the room, can, and asks, "You like my costume, huh, Lex?"
Lex mirrors his sly grin and hands him a plastic cup. They tap their cups together and take a sip, and then Lex spoke.
"I do, Clark. After all, Devilicus has always been my favorite villain."
